‘Habitat’ project likely in Sudbury - L-S group wants to help

By Faraz Butte

Habitat for Humanity, a charity organization that builds residential housing for needy people, is currently planning a Sudbury project, consisting of a duplex on the corner of Dutton and Pratts Mill Road. The ground breaking is planned for this summer, but dates are may change due to regulatory approvals from the town.
The Lincoln-Sudbury Martin Luther King Action Project has already announced its interest in helping this local Habitat effort.
At a Sudbury town meeting on March 11, supporters of the project asked the selectmen for a signed letter of support for the Habitat project and to authorize the official application.
At the meeting, only one individual voiced concern about any of the project’s details. The lot has been deemed unbuildible in the past because it does not have the the required frontage on either street. Also, set backs from other lots, septic location and safety concerns because of an increased number of children living in the area were cited as concerns. Doug Haven, the Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, and Beth Rust, the Sudbury Housing Specialist, offered to meet with anyone to discuss concerns and inquires regarding the project.
Additionally, some have voiced concern about the risk of property values declining as Habitat For Humanity houses are built, however, these houses have a high success rate. “It only takes a look at the house being built in Acton to see how quality and craftsmanship are important to those who design the homes and execute the build,” says Chris Straub, a major supporter of the project.
Overall, however the project has received enthusiastic support from the town selectmen, along with various town groups including the Sudbury Clergy Association and its memeber congregations, the Earth Decade Committee, the Lincoln-Sudbury Martin Luther King Action Project, MI
