When walking out to the turf field for practice in the first week of June, the girls varsity lacrosse team didn’t see much besides empty fields. Aside from boys’ volleyball and track and field, the girls’ lacrosse team was the last spring sport standing.
After an undefeated season in the DCL, the Warriors won the title of DCL Champions for the fourth year in a row. The only flaw to the almost-perfect season was their loss against the defending state champions, the Framingham Flyers, in early May.
Captains Kelly Cakert and Natalie Kerns’ optimistic attitude throughout the entire season proved to be a major contribution to the team’s success. “We’ve been working so hard all season to prepare for tournament,” said Cakert prior to the tournament. “We have so much talent this year and we’ve really come together as a team.”
As the first seed in the North Division bracket, the girls’ had the advantage of playing all of their tournament games at home. The first game against Lowell on May 27th was a great one for L-S, with a final score of 17-5. The next game was only four days later against Chelmsford, and resulted in another victory for the Warriors, with a final score of 15-6. Then, on June 3rd the girls played Lexington, a strong and athletic team. During the first half of the game, L-S struggled to connect in the midfield and maintain a lead, but as the second half began, the team stepped up. L-S pulled through in the end to win 16-7. Junior Alexa Rozelle was the leading scorer, contributing six goals.
Next up for the girls was Framingham on a scorchingly hot Saturday afternoon. It did not start well though, as midfielder Addy Quirk injured her ankle and was forced to watch the rest of the match from the sidelines.
Another major setback for the Warriors was the Flyers’ fifteen minute long scoring streak that totaled six goals in the first half. Then, in the second half, the Flyers scored seven goals in only thirteen minutes. The Warriors scored four goals at the end of the game, but it just wasn’t enough to defeat the dominant Framingham team. It was a tragic defeat for L-S, but they are already looking forward to contending again next year.
