Editorial - A lesson well worth considering

Walking through the halls of L-S, one observes a parade of advertisement- bedecked clothing and students occupied by their most recent text messages. The obsessions of our capitalist society have thus far captivated the student body, penetrating every aspect of our existence, whether it be where to shop, which cell phone to purchase, or how best to style one’s hair.
For this reason, the Tibetan monks’ recent visit to Lincoln-Sudbury High School will hopefully inspire students to reevaluate our materialistic impulses. Along with creating an intricate and equally beautiful mandala, the monks provided a message only too pertinent to our society: attachment to material objects only leads to discontent.
As the monks gracefully destroyed the product of their long labors, students might also attempt to dislodge the all too prominent place material objects occupy in their lives. Let us attempt to transcend the conventions of our society and strive to embody ideals such as compassion and mindfulness rather than merely acquiring the latest fashion or piece of technology.
