It’s 12:15 on a Tuesday and we are maneuvering ourselves through the crowded cafeteria. Despite the many distractions, Lincoln- Sudbury senior Dave Alderman and junior Brent Crane of the student band ‘Pangaea’ are focused and ready. “So this is how it all went down,” begins Dave, “me, Brent, and this kid Matt Savit started jamming last spring.”As Dave begins the story of Pangaea’s formation, with Brent cutting in and occasionally finishing his sentences, I rush to take it all down. “But then Matt Savit went off to Boulder, Colorado for school.” This happened, explains Brent, just as Sam Herson got kicked out of Proctor Academy for being “too good at drums.” Thus Pangaea was formed, with Dave on bass, Brent on guitar and vocals, and Sam on the drums.
Drawing from bands such as the Grateful Dead, the Dave Matthews Band, Phish, the Allman Brothers, and Sublime, Pangaea is, as Brent says, “a mesh of a variety of influences.” The name ‘Pangaea’ is an indication in itself of the band’s endeavors to “pull from all different genres and times.” While Dave claims to be an Allman Brothers fan, Brent confides in being influenced mainly by the “sounds of nature.” At this, I laugh, though he seems quite serious.
Though Brent and Dave admit to doing a number of Sublime covers, they proudly announce their originals to include “Stand,” “The Youth,” and “The Gooch.” Pangaea can be seen playing in a number of venues, from coffee houses to Darfur events. Recently the band played at a Dominica fundraiser, and come summer, Dave and Brent can be found “at your local Russell’s” playing acoustic pieces at the farmers’ markets. The band has no big future plans, as Dave says, “we’re just enjoying playing, and that’s all.”
