The L-S boys’ track team is continuing to shine in the DCL, though Coach Mel Gonsalves says that there is plenty of room for improvement.
“We’re going to need to be firing on all cylinders for our upcoming meets. We’re going to need maximum effort from everyone here on in,” Gonsalves said.
The Warriors are currently 3-1 in the DCL, but they feel that by the end of the week they can get their record up to 5-1 and be in contention to tie for the championship of the DCL.
Two Warriors consistently provide stellar athletics and invaluable leadership. They are Bryant Wang and Colin Kleeman. According to Gonsalves they “understand the tradition of our team,” and their athletic ability gains the team “20 points right off the bat.”
Other Warriors who are dominating their domain of the team include junior Sam Wuest who is the premier high jumper on the team. “He’s just two inches away from being among the elite high jumpers,” said Gonsalves.
Senior Ben Cutting also proved his value to the squad with a throw of 156-0, which is “an outstanding throw.”
On the younger side of the team, there are numerous athletes who are proving themselves for future years. Sophomore Dareek Sims shines in the 100 meter race with his most recent time at 11.35 seconds. Gonsalves was considering slowly moving him into the 200 meter race, which is a harder race to run, but after his recent performances, “He’s absolutely locked in.” Sims also placed 13th out of 45 in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet.
Other under classmen such as sophomores John Ellersick and Jeff Dykes both clocked in tremendous times in the mile; 4:43.7 and 4:59.2 respectively. Freshman Jon Wessling placed eighth out of 38 in the 400 meter race with a time of 54.7 seconds.
The L-S boys’ track team looks forward to continuing their tradition of excellence in the state and hope to carry the success that is spread throughout all grade levels well into the playoffs.
In order for that to happen though, Gonsalves says “We’ll need to check our level of passion, our level of commitment.”
